Ask Isadora: The Magic Pill

* Can women take Viagra or Levitra or Cialis? Does it do anything for them in the way of better sex? If not, is there something a woman can take to either want sex more or have better orgasms?

Ah, the Magic Pill quest, one that will never replace a patient and creative lover! Some women have reported an increase in desire with Viagra and its counterparts, but those drugs are not approved for women so any positive results are maybes (and potentially dangerous if taken without a doctor’s clearance). There are some herbal concoctions that do seem to increase desire in some women, ArginMax is one of them. The best sex enhancer I know of is free and has no bad side effects, although it’s often difficult to obtain. (I can’t very well say “difficult to come by” , can I?) My favorite sex enhancer is an interesting and interested partner.

* My husband and I have a bet going on this. What percentage of men cheat as opposed to what percentage of women? He says it’s about the same. I say men cheat a lot more than women. What do you say?

It’s almost impossible to obtain accurate statistics on this matter. Very few people want to admit to an interviewer that they cheat, since infidelity is almost universally frowned upon. Fairly believable recent data is from the General Social Survey, sponsored by the University of Chicago’s National Science Foundation, which has used a national representative sample to track the opinions and social behaviors of Americans since 1972. The survey data show that in any given year, about 10 percent of married people — 12 percent of men and 7 percent of women — say they have had sex outside their marriage. University of Washington researchers have found that the lifetime rate of infidelity for men over 60 increased to 28 percent in 2006 and for women over 60, to 15 percent. (Maybe 65 IS the new 45!) In younger people their data indicates about 20 percent of men and 15 percent of women under 35 say they have ever been unfaithful. So, while the numbers vary, most seem to say that married men stray more often than married women.

* I am a 32 year old woman who has just received a marriage proposal from my boyfriend of two years. The fly in the ointment here is that he says he doesn’t ever want to have children and I do, and soon too. Do people ever change their minds about this?

People change their minds about all sorts of things all the time but I sure wouldn’t marry with the hope that he’s one of them and this is one of those things. There is an adage that women go into marriage hoping that their man will change and men go into marriage hoping that their woman won’t change. Both are usually disappointed. A disagreement about future family is a damn big fly in some very icky ointment. Until you resolve this issue, perhaps with a marriage counselor, I would strongly recommend against marriage.

* If someone is in a wheelchair can she have sex?

It depends why she uses a wheelchair and it also depends on what kind of sex. I would make no assumptions. There are some good educational videos available on sexual positions for various incapacities and famed sex researcher Beverly Whipple, the G spot woman, has even been studying orgasmic capabilities in woman paralized below the waist. If there is someone you have potential interest in who is a wheelchair rider I would certainly check out your attraction.
